· University of Indonesia launched a global university ranking in 2010, later known as UI Green-Metric World University Rankings, to measure campus sustainability efforts. The aim was to create an electronic database of universities' sustainability programs and policies worldwide.

· 95 universities from 35 countries participated in a 2010 version of 18 universities from the Americas, 35 universities from Europe, 40 universities from Asia, and 2 universities from Australia.

· All universities in the world that are concerned with sustainability issues can participate in the annual UI Green-Metric classification, as this classification is aimed at greening universities and the sustainability of the campus and therefore registration is free of charge.
· The best definition of sustainability is to avoid over-depleting natural resources in order to maintain environmental balance. Based on sustainability and its importance in conserving natural resources and environmental balance, the entry of Iraqi universities into the UI Green-Metrics classification is an important criterion in the preservation of the Iraqi environment and the beginning of Iraq's societal structure with the global sustainability revolution. The entry of Iraqi universities into this classification will improve Iraq's reputation as a sustainable country and positively affect the reputation of Iraqi universities in other global classifications.

The ranking is based on six main standards that are concerned with measuring a number of indicators: the working environment and infrastructure on campus, energy and climate change, waste management, optimal water use, and the extent to which attention is paid to environmental sustainability in education and its introduction of environmental and sustainable development distances within its academic programs, and in the field of and on-campus transportation. The proportion distribution is almost equal and this indicates the importance of all standards.
